Sports Portraits – A Summer Challenge Revisited

So you may recall, I set myself up with a Summer Challenge last year (back in the days when there was sun and warmth…). It was all about learning a new technique, trying some new software and practicing a new editing style. In the process the Sports Portrait was born! I was SO excited about the whole process that I convinced the powers that be for the Kent Island Football Team to allow me to photograph all of the seniors on the team and create these awesome portraits. We totally did it on the sly too – none of the players, coaches or parents knew exactly what we were up to. On senior night my cohort in deviousness and I hung all the senior players’ sports portraits by the entrance gate. They were a HUGE hit. I was like a little kid – so full of energy and excitement to see a surprise project that had been in the works for months finally make its debut! My brain is already spinning on how to change it up for next year’s senior football sports portrait! (The image below is actually a test image and not one of the senior images – he’s junior, but his time is quickly approaching!)

And here’s the thing about these kinds of projects – they grow. I received a call from a parent who’s son had been a senior on the football team and was now playing on the basketball team. She loved the football images so much she wondered if I could do something similar for the seniors on the basketball team. Of course I could! I love how images for the basketball team are similar but have their own feel at the same time.

Even more amazing – the Sports Portraits are going to grow yet again! The night the senior basketball portraits were unveiled I was asked by several parents if I could do something similar for the lacrosse and baseball team seniors. We’re already in the process of syncing calendars to schedule a day to get the players in front of my camera. I LOVE IT! I love what this personal project is growing into!!
